Two armies. One challenge.
Before a stone is chosen, a whole army is afraid.
The opening scene is not a private argument. Israel and the Philistines face one another across a valley. Goliath proposes a representative contest with consequences for the armies. Notice how much space the narrator gives his equipment—and how his words affect Saul and Israel.
The setting
Two armies stand on opposite mountains, with a valley between them.
1 Samuel 17:2–3
The challenger
Goliath is a Philistine champion from Gath.
1 Samuel 17:4
The response
Saul and all Israel are dismayed and greatly afraid.
1 Samuel 17:11
Listen to the terms
Goliath calls for one man to fight him and makes the outcome a question of service and subjection.
1 Samuel 17:8–9
Notice the contrast
An intimidating description of armour and weapons is followed by a description of fear. The story will return to what does—and does not—save.
1 Samuel 17:4–11
Read the measurement as given
The KJV gives Goliath’s height as six cubits and a span. This app does not turn that ancient measurement into an exact modern height or make it a test of faith.
1 Samuel 17:4
An ordinary errand.
Bread, cheese, sheep—and a coming encounter.
Jesse sends David to bring provisions and find out how his brothers are doing. David is the youngest, still moving between Saul’s service and his father’s sheep. His arrival begins with an entrusted task, not with a stated plan to seek a duel.
The family
Jesse’s three eldest sons follow Saul to battle. David is the youngest.
1 Samuel 17:13–14
The supplies
Jesse sends grain and ten loaves for the brothers, and ten cheeses for their commander.
1 Samuel 17:17–18
The care
David leaves the sheep with a keeper before he goes.
1 Samuel 17:20
Forty days of challenge
Goliath has been presenting himself morning and evening for forty days. David steps into an already-established atmosphere of fear.
1 Samuel 17:16
Responsibility before the encounter
David entrusts the sheep and then the baggage to keepers. The narrative does not portray him abandoning every duty.
1 Samuel 17:20–22
Young is not an exact age
The chapter calls David the youngest and later a youth. It does not give his age in years. A precise age in a retelling should be labelled an estimate.
1 Samuel 17:14
1 Samuel 17:33
He hears the same words.
One challenge. Different ways of hearing it.
David hears Goliath’s challenge as the others do. The soldiers speak about fear and the promised reward; David speaks about reproach against Israel and the armies of the living God. Eliab, his eldest brother, questions his motives. Read each speaker’s words without confusing an accusation with the narrator’s verdict.
He hears
Goliath speaks his challenge, and David hears him.
1 Samuel 17:23
He asks
David asks about removing Israel’s reproach and defiance of the living God.
1 Samuel 17:26
He is challenged
Eliab accuses David of pride and coming to see the battle.
1 Samuel 17:28
The same event, a different centre
Others flee from the man. David’s question brings the living God into the conversation.
1 Samuel 17:24–26
An accusation is not an omniscient verdict
Eliab claims to know David’s motives. The reader has already been told that Jesse sent David. Keep those voices distinct.
1 Samuel 17:28–30
Do not erase the reward conversation
David does ask what will be done for the victor. The passage also records his concern for God’s honour. Read both rather than simplifying his speech into a slogan.
1 Samuel 17:25–27
Remembered deliverance.
David’s confidence has a history—and a named source.
David offers to fight. Saul compares a youth with a seasoned warrior. David answers with his experience protecting sheep from a lion and a bear, but his final explanation does not stop at his own strength: he names the Lord as the one who delivered him.
The offer
David tells Saul not to lose heart and offers to fight.
1 Samuel 17:32
The objection
Saul contrasts David’s youth with Goliath’s experience.
1 Samuel 17:33
The source
David credits the Lord with delivering him from lion and bear.
1 Samuel 17:37
Experience and dependence
David recounts action and danger, then interprets his survival as the Lord’s deliverance. The two are not presented as opposites.
1 Samuel 17:34–37
Notice Saul’s reply
Saul tells David to go and says the Lord be with him. The conversation moves from objection to permission.
1 Samuel 17:37
Not a guarantee for every risk
David’s confidence belongs to this narrated encounter. It should not be turned into a promise that any dangerous choice will succeed if we feel certain enough.
1 Samuel 17:36–37
Armour set aside.
The stated reason matters more than a familiar picture.
Saul dresses David in his armour. David tries moving with it and then takes it off. His reason is that he has not tested or become accustomed to it. The chapter does not say the armour is comically oversized; that belongs to some retellings, not to the wording here.
The offer
Saul supplies armour, a helmet and a coat of mail.
1 Samuel 17:38
The trial
David fastens the sword and tries to go.
1 Samuel 17:39
The choice
He removes what he has not proved or tested.
1 Samuel 17:39
Read the explanation aloud
The KJV repeats “I have not proved them.” Let the explanation in the sentence lead your understanding.
1 Samuel 17:39
The next scene is preparation, not nothing
David goes on to choose stones and carry a staff, bag and sling. Refusing one form of equipment is not refusing all preparation.
1 Samuel 17:40
Application is not a quotation
“Use what you know” can be a reflective takeaway. It is not a universal biblical ban on learning unfamiliar skills or receiving help.
1 Samuel 17:38–40
Five smooth stones.
Count the stones. Do not invent their meaning.
One verse carefully names David’s equipment: a staff, five smooth stones from the brook, a shepherd’s bag and a sling. It tells us what he chooses, but not why he chooses exactly five. Read this concrete preparation alongside his declaration that the battle belongs to the Lord.
The number
David chooses five smooth stones.
1 Samuel 17:40
The source
The stones come from the brook and go into his shepherd’s bag.
1 Samuel 17:40
The approach
He draws near with his sling in his hand.
1 Samuel 17:40
What the number can tell us
The narrator states five stones were selected. The verse does not explain a symbolic meaning or a plan for four other opponents.
1 Samuel 17:40
Preparation within trust
The passage shows practical means as well as dependence on God. Neither should be edited out of the story.
1 Samuel 17:40
A learning device, not a hidden code
The five clickable stones in this app organise five observations. They are our study aid—not five meanings claimed for David’s stones.
1 Samuel 17:40
In the Lord’s name.
The centre of the story is spoken before the victory.
Goliath despises David’s appearance, curses him by his gods and threatens him. David’s reply names the Lord of hosts and explains what the outcome is to make known: there is a God in Israel, and he does not depend on sword and spear to save.
Goliath’s words
He disdains David, curses him and threatens him.
1 Samuel 17:42–44
David’s answer
He comes in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel’s armies.
1 Samuel 17:45
The declared purpose
The earth and the assembly are to know God and his saving power.
1 Samuel 17:46–47
Not simply “believe in yourself”
David’s speech locates his confidence in God’s name and action. His own size is not the speech’s central claim.
1 Samuel 17:45–47
Watch the pronouns
The speech moves beyond “my hand” to “our hands.” This is deliverance affecting a people, not merely personal fame.
1 Samuel 17:46–47
Do not turn neighbours into Goliaths
This is an account of an ancient armed conflict. It is not permission to threaten people we disagree with or declare that God endorses our personal ambitions.
1 Samuel 17:45–47
A stone. A fallen champion.
A decisive action—and the outcome the chapter records.
David runs to meet Goliath and uses a stone from his bag. Goliath falls facedown. The narrator summarises David’s victory with sling and stone, then describes him taking Goliath’s own sword. Read the verses together rather than stopping the story at its most familiar image.
The movement
David hastens and runs toward the Philistine.
1 Samuel 17:48
The impact
The stone strikes Goliath’s forehead; he falls facedown.
1 Samuel 17:49
The sword
David has no sword in the initial victory, then takes Goliath’s sword.
1 Samuel 17:50–51
A summary and a further description
Verse 50 summarises the victory; verse 51 describes the sword and the champion’s death. Do not force the passage into a more precise medical sequence than it supplies.
1 Samuel 17:50–51
The observers respond
When the Philistines see that their champion is dead, they flee. The challenge’s consequences extend to the army.
1 Samuel 17:51
Read without sensationalising
These verses include death and beheading. The study preserves the Scripture but does not turn that violence into a shooting game or an invitation to imitate it.
1 Samuel 17:49–51
An army moves.
The story does not end with one person standing alone.
Israel and Judah rise, shout and pursue the fleeing Philistines. The account goes on to the camp and the keeping of Goliath’s armour. The frightened army has become active. Notice how the narrative’s beginning and ending belong to the wider people as well as to David.
The response
The men of Israel and Judah rise, shout and pursue.
1 Samuel 17:52
The return
The Israelites return and plunder the Philistine tents.
1 Samuel 17:53
The detail
David keeps Goliath’s armour in his tent.
1 Samuel 17:54
Return to the beginning
Compare the people’s flight earlier with their movement now. The outcome changes the position of the army.
1 Samuel 17:52
Keep the narrative’s scale
David’s speech anticipated what the earth and the assembly would know. The narrator now shows a public, communal outcome.
1 Samuel 17:46–47
Do not invent a precise itinerary
Verse 54 mentions Jerusalem and the armour in the tent. It does not give a detailed travel timetable. Keep that report without filling in unprovided stages.
1 Samuel 17:54
Whose son is this?
The chapter closes with a family name, not a self-help slogan.
The final verses report Saul asking Abner about the young man’s father. Abner brings David before Saul, and David identifies himself as Jesse’s son from Bethlehem. The closing question returns the reader to the family introduced earlier in the chapter.
The question
Saul asks Abner whose son the youth is.
1 Samuel 17:55
The introduction
Abner brings David before Saul after the encounter.
1 Samuel 17:57
The answer
David identifies himself as Jesse the Bethlehemite’s son.
1 Samuel 17:58
Hear the question accurately
Saul asks about David’s father. The chapter does not say “I have never seen you.” Avoid replacing the stated question with a stronger claim.
1 Samuel 17:55–58
Return to the central declaration
Finish by rereading the reason David gave for his confidence and the knowledge he wanted the victory to produce.
1 Samuel 17:45–47
A starting point for careful rereading
Questions about how the surrounding narrative fits together deserve patient reading. This scene gives an inquiry and an answer; it does not supply every explanation we might want.
1 Samuel 17:55–58

King James Version
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
Uses “the Lord of hosts” and “the battle is the Lord’s.” In verse 45 it renders the third weapon “shield.”
World English Bible
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46 Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
47 and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
Uses “Yahweh of Armies” and “javelin.” The same contrast remains: Goliath’s weapons and David’s reliance on God.
American Standard Version
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will Jehovah deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day unto the birds of the heavens, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
47 and that all this assembly may know that Jehovah saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is Jehovah’s, and he will give you into our hand.
Uses “Jehovah of hosts” and “javelin.” Publisher footnote markers are omitted; wording is retained.
Darby Translation
45 And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin; but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will Jehovah deliver thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild beasts of the earth. And all the earth shall know that Israel has a God;
47 and all this congregation shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah's, and he will give you into our hands.
Uses “congregation” in verse 47. Notice that the intended witnesses include all the earth and the gathered assembly.
Young’s Literal Translation
45 And David saith unto the Philistine, `Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.
46 This day doth Jehovah shut thee up into my hand -- and I have smitten thee, and turned aside thy head from off thee, and given the carcase of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth, and all the earth do know that God is for Israel.
47 and all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear doth Jehovah save, that the battle [is] Jehovah's, and He hath given you into our hand.'
Retains a deliberately literal English style, including “buckler” and the supplied word “[is].” Its phrasing differs from contemporary English.

3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
